Full report
The crash happened around 6:50 a.m. Saturday in the 22600 block of Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu, just outside Nobu Malibu, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
A Range Rover driven by a 16-year-old boy struck a car parked on the shoulder. The parked car's occupant was killed. He was identified as Ryo Uchimiya, 51, a longtime sushi chef at Nobu Malibu of roughly 25 years, who had arrived early for his shift and was waiting in his car.
LASD Sgt. John Addington said the teen appeared to have been speeding. Investigators saw no signs of DUI. The teen remained at the scene and is cooperating; no charges have been filed and the investigation is ongoing.
A portion of PCH was closed after the crash, with a SigAlert expected to remain in effect until about noon Saturday.
Context: Malibu's 21-mile stretch of PCH is one of California's deadliest roads, averaging about four crash fatalities a year over the past decade. A 2023 case in which a driver going roughly 104 mph in a 45-mph zone killed four Pepperdine students renewed calls for safety measures on the highway.
