Port of Los Angeles sets September record with 1.04 million TEUs

The busiest US container port handled 1.04 million TEUs in September, a monthly record; loaded containers also hit a record at about 547,000 TEUs, driven by holiday goods and Panama Canal diversions.

Why it matters

The busiest US container port's numbers are watched as a barometer of American consumer demand and reactions to trade policy. A record September suggests importers are restocking faster as tariffs ease from earlier levels.

Full report

The Port of Los Angeles handled 1.04 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in September, a monthly record, Executive Director Gene Seroka said Friday. Loaded containers accounted for almost 547,000 TEUs, also a new record.

Seroka said holiday goods arriving at the docks, ships routed away from the drought-stricken Panama Canal to the West Coast, and tariffs running lower than earlier this year and last all contributed. With more cost certainty, importers are replenishing inventories at a quicker rate, and some Asia services shifted from the East Coast because the West Coast is the fastest route from China.

Total US container imports reached 2.55 million TEUs in September, a record for the month, according to supply-chain technology provider Descartes Systems. Shipments of equipment tied to AI projects, including components used to cool data centers, are also booming.
