The National Weather Service issued a coastal flood advisory for Los Angeles and Orange County beaches from 5 a.m. Sunday to 1 p.m. Thursday; morning tides of 7.5 to 8 feet are expected Sunday through Thursday, with Monday to Wednesday tides possibly challenging the 2005 record.

The National Weather Service has issued a coastal flood advisory for Los Angeles and Orange County beaches, in effect from 5 a.m. Sunday to 1 p.m. Thursday. Forecasters expect morning high tides of 7.5 to 8 feet from Sunday through Thursday.

A two-decade record in reach

The weather service said tides from Monday through Wednesday could challenge the current record of 7.93 feet, set in San Pedro on January 10, 2005, with records going back to 1924. Minor coastal flooding is likely based on the high tides alone, forecasters said.

Where flooding is expected

Shallow flooding is expected in low-lying spots such as harbor walkways, beach parking lots and bike paths. Areas of Long Beach, Malibu and Newport Beach have already seen substantial damage to homes from high surf in recent weeks. There is also a moderate rip current risk during the advisory period, so beachgoers should take extra care.

Warmer weather is expected early in the week in Southern California, with daytime highs mostly in the mid- to upper 70s Fahrenheit. From Thursday, the pattern changes, temperatures drop and low pressure develops off the West Coast; forecasters put the chance of rain sometime from October 30 to November 2 at 90%, which could affect Halloween activities.
