Los Angeles under Red Flag alert as Santa Ana winds bring 70 mph gusts

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for much of Los Angeles County for Oct. 15–16, with mountain gusts of 50 to 70 mph; the city declared a Red Flag Alert with special parking restrictions starting 6 a.m. Thursday for at least 48 hours.
Why it matters
The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for much of Los Angeles County from October 15 through Friday night. Strong Santa Ana winds combined with very low humidity could produce rapid fire spread; gusts of 50 to 70 miles per hour are forecast in mountain areas, with widespread gusty winds across valleys and coastal communities, and critical conditions could linger into Saturday.
Los Angeles County said it is activating its Emergency Operations Center and Joint Information Center beginning Thursday morning and pre-positioning additional ground and aerial fire resources, with augmented fire department staffing and a 24-hour watch center coordinating response. The county also warned of possible utility-initiated Public Safety Power Shutoffs and unplanned outages that can disrupt communications, traffic signals and electrically powered medical equipment.
