Why it matters

Southern California is facing dangerous Santa Ana wind conditions under a Red Flag Warning, when fires can spiral out of control in minutes. The county activated its Emergency Operations Center ahead of the peak winds.

Full report

Los Angeles County's alert system issued an emergency evacuation alert at 1:40 p.m. on October 15: a fast-moving wildfire was burning near San Gabriel Canyon in Azusa, and police ordered the immediate evacuation of the Roberts Canyon and San Gabriel Canyon areas, warning residents to "LEAVE NOW" because staying put endangers their safety.

County fire dispatch records place the fire near the intersection of San Gabriel Canyon Road and Ranch Road. NBC4 reported on October 15 that the Azusa hillside wildfire had triggered evacuation orders.

A Red Flag Warning is in effect for parts of Los Angeles County, with critical fire weather expected to continue through Friday: strong winds, low humidity and dry vegetation raise the risk of damaged electrical infrastructure and rapidly spreading fires. The county Office of Emergency Management activated its Emergency Operations Center and Joint Information Center ahead of the peak winds, and Gov. Gavin Newsom directed Cal Fire and the state Office of Emergency Services to pre-position firefighters, engines, aircraft and specialized equipment across Southern California. Topanga Canyon Boulevard is closed to non-residents from 6 a.m. Thursday through 10 p.m. Friday, and Glendora Mountain Road and Glendora Ridge Road are also closed.
