Why it matters

Speaking in Grand Island, Nebraska, Trump said of Iran: "They can take out a city — let 'em take, let 'em take out Los Angeles, let 'em take out San Diego. That's — this is a very small price to pay." It was unclear whether he was daring Iran to attack the cities or warning of what could happen without his own strikes on Tehran. He offered no evidence that Iran possesses weapons capable of such an attack.
California Governor Gavin Newsom's press office responded: "Let's be clear: The President is advocating for an attack on 10+ million U.S. residents in two of America's largest cities. This is not normal." Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass also pushed back. At the same rally, Trump signed an executive order easing limits on the tax-free use of red-dyed diesel through the end of the year, saying "the typical trucker will save more than $100 every time they fill up," and repeated his pledge to give every adult $5,000 if Republicans win the midterms.
