Caltrans announced that the Vincent Thomas Bridge, linking San Pedro and Terminal Island, will close fully in both directions from 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, November 7, for about 16 months while its deck is replaced, with reopening targeted for March 1, 2028. The $752.8 million project will force about 53,000 vehicles a day to find another route.

The Vincent Thomas Bridge in San Pedro, Los Angeles, will close fully from 12:01 a.m. this Saturday, November 7. The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) announced that State Route 47 across the bridge will shut in both directions for about 16 months while the aging bridge deck is replaced, with reopening targeted for March 1, 2028.

$753 million deck replacement, with new railings and seismic sensors

The $752.8 million Vincent Thomas Bridge Deck Replacement Project, built by the Skanska-CEC Joint Venture, will replace the entire concrete roadway and modernize safety features including railings, fencing, the center median, lighting, signage and seismic sensors. The closure covers State Route 47 between Harbor Boulevard and Ferry Street, along with on-ramps and highway connections. Vessel navigation will not be interrupted.

53,000 vehicles a day to divert as port cargo runs at a record pace

About 53,000 vehicles a day use the bridge, nearly 9 percent of them heavy trucks. The closure was originally set for November 1 but was pushed back six days for final coordination. The Port of Los Angeles set an all-time monthly cargo record in September, and the Los Angeles and Long Beach ports together handle roughly a third of U.S. seaborne container trade. At the same time, the contract for about 250 watchmen represented by ILWU Local 26 at the two ports has been extended to midnight on Friday, November 6, with talks continuing under federal mediation and a strike threat still in play. Caltrans advises drivers to check its QuickMap app for real-time conditions.
