A groundbreaking ceremony was held Oct. 3 for the redevelopment of Charles White Park in Altadena, destroyed in the Eaton Fire. Plans include a new recreation center, a Disney Imagineers-designed playground and public art honoring artist Charles White.

Why it matters

The Eaton Fire destroyed more than 6,000 homes and 9,000 structures in Altadena in January 2025. Rebuilding the park named for a celebrated Black artist — with a Disney-designed playground and a new recreation center — marks a visible step in the community's long recovery.

Full report

A groundbreaking ceremony was held Saturday, Oct. 3, for an extensive redevelopment of Charles White Park in Altadena, where two playgrounds and restrooms were destroyed in the 2025 Eaton Fire, MyNewsLA reported. About 200 people attended, including the planting of a 10,000-pound Coast Live Oak by backhoe.

Plans for the five-acre park include a new recreation center, pickleball courts with lighting, a splash pad and interactive water feature, new landscaping, and a nature-based inclusive playground designed by Disney Imagineers. Public art and interpretive areas will honor Charles White, the renowned Black artist for whom the park is named. The Walt Disney Company donated $5 million toward the restoration, with state funding also helping.

"Altadena has lost so much, but it has not lost its spirit," Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger said. Rep. Judy Chu added: "Today's groundbreaking means Altadena isn't just rebuilding, it's coming back to life." The ceremony fell on the 47th anniversary of White's death; the artist's son Ian White attended. White, who lived his last 20 years in Altadena, died in 1979.
