Mauritius imposes overnight curfew after police-shooting unrest

· N GLOBE

PM Navin Ramgoolam announced an overnight curfew for Port Louis and major population centres after a police shooting triggered rare unrest. The curfew was lifted at 6am Wednesday; cabinet meets in the afternoon to reassess.

Why it matters

Unrest is rare on Mauritius, a tourist and offshore-banking island in the Indian Ocean. A police shooting escalating into tyre-burning and road blockades forced the government to resort to a curfew — a measure it almost never uses.

Full report

Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam announced in a televised national address on Tuesday an overnight curfew from 8:30pm to 6am (Mauritius time) covering Port Louis and other major population centres. The curfew was lifted at 6am on Wednesday.

The trigger was a Friday-night shooting: Élodie Thomas, 27, was shot by a police officer while travelling home from work in a van south of the capital. A police sergeant has been provisionally charged, and the health minister said surgery successfully removed the bullet. An investigation is under way.

On Monday night, protesters burned tyres, blocked roads and attacked police stations, shops and vehicles in some areas. Reuters reported schools closed in parts of the country on Tuesday. The PM alleged drug traffickers financed some of the disturbances — a claim not independently verified. Local outlet CAJ News Africa noted water-supply grievances are also fuelling tension.
