A court in Ensenada, Mexico, has found three men guilty of aggravated homicide, armed robbery and carjacking in the April 2024 killing of Australians Callum and Jake Robinson and American Carter Rhoad in Baja California; sentencing is set for Oct. 16.

Why it matters

Judge Raúl Hernández in Ensenada, Baja California, ruled on Friday, Oct. 9, that three men are guilty in the internationally shocking 2024 triple homicide, concluding a month-long trial.

Jesús Gerardo García (alias "El Kekas"), Irineo Francisco "N" and Ángel Jesús "N" were convicted of aggravated homicide, armed robbery and armed carjacking. The victims were Australian brothers Callum Robinson, 33, Jake Robinson, 30, and their American friend Carter Redd Rhoad, 30.

The three had travelled to Baja California in April 2024 to surf, camping near Punta San José, about 80 kilometres south of Ensenada. They were reported missing shortly after arrival, and their bodies were found on May 3, 2024, in a well, with gunshot wounds to the head. Testimony revealed that García's ex-partner, Ary Gisell Silva Raya, said García had confessed to arriving at the tourists' tent with a 9mm pistol; prosecutors said she instigated the robbery on April 27–28.

The trial began Sept. 7, and the judge found the killings were premeditated. Prosecutors had sought sentences of well over 100 years for each defendant (the maximum in Baja California is 60 years); sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 16. The victims' parents, Martin and Debra Robinson, travelled from Australia to hear the verdict; Debra Robinson said: "A verdict is a good thing, but it doesn't bring them back."
