A female patient showing Ebola-like symptoms arrived at the Centre hospitalier de l'Université de Montréal late Thursday afternoon, triggering isolation protocols; she tested negative that evening and emergency measures were lifted, with no risk to the public.

Why it matters

With a deadly Ebola outbreak still spreading in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a suspected case at a Canadian hospital briefly raised concern. CHUM activated its established isolation protocols and ruled out the threat within hours, showing the hospital's response system for high-risk pathogens is working as intended.

Full report

A female patient arrived at the Centre hospitalier de l'Université de Montréal (CHUM) late Thursday afternoon, Oct. 1, exhibiting symptoms of Ebola. Hospital spokesperson Irène Marcheterre said the hospital immediately enacted its required isolation protocols once the suspicious symptoms were identified, with all necessary safety measures put in place.

Marcheterre insisted there was no risk to the public. Just before 8 p.m., another spokesperson, Ellen Caracas, told CBC News the patient had tested negative for Ebola and emergency protocols were lifted.

The suspected case came amid an ongoing and deadly Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where thousands have died in recent months. Marcheterre could not confirm whether the patient had recently travelled from the region, saying she did not know the woman's travel history.
