Montréal city professionals to strike evenings and weekends from Oct. 19

Around 3,000 City of Montreal professionals will strike weekday evenings and weekends from Oct. 19 in a dispute over wages and teleworking.
Why it matters
Around 3,000 professionals employed by the City of Montreal will walk off the job every weekday evening and night, and around the clock on weekends, starting October 19. It is the second strike this year for the Montreal Municipal Professionals Union, which represents staff in libraries, information technology, water management, culture, the environment and finance. The union says the walkout will bite hardest at city services with atypical hours, such as libraries, cultural services and IT, and at the fall budget process, which regularly runs past normal office hours.
Full report
The strike will run weekdays from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m., and continuously through the weekend, the union announced Friday. It follows a one-day strike on March 30. Members voted 90.6 per cent in favour of a strike mandate on Sept. 23. The collective agreement expired on December 31, 2023, and the dispute centres on wages and teleworking. Union president Anne Dorais called it “a strike of great disruption,” while stressing that essential services will be maintained: “We don’t want to jeopardize essential services; we’re not there at all.” The announcement comes shortly after the city reached an agreement in principle with another major union, the 6,000 blue-collar workers’ union, a CUPE local affiliated with the FTQ. Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada has previously said she has little room to maneuver given the city’s financial situation and wants to respect residents’ ability to pay.
