· N GLOBE

Tourisme Montréal will run nearly 60 free guided tours from October 2 to November 1, in French and English, inviting residents to see the city's neighbourhoods and attractions with fresh eyes.

Why it matters

Tourism isn't only about welcoming outsiders: Montreal's official tourism body is turning its guided tours toward locals on a large scale for the first time, aiming to reconnect residents with their own city and with the benefits tourism brings.

To mark World Tourism Day on September 27, Tourisme Montréal is launching a new initiative: from October 2 to November 1, residents can join nearly 60 free guided tours, in French and English, offering a fresh perspective on the city's neighbourhoods and attractions.

"Tourism is about more than welcoming visitors from outside the city. A tourism destination is first and foremost a city where people live, work and create. We want to bring Montrealers closer to tourism and help them better understand the benefits it generates for the community as a whole," said Yves Lalumière, president and CEO of Tourisme Montréal.

A resident sentiment study commissioned by the organization found that 82% of Montrealers are proud to welcome tourists, with a tourism aversion index of just 4% — well below the threshold for tourism-related tensions. From Expo 67 and the 1976 Olympic Games to the metro, tourism has long driven investment and shaped Montreal's international profile.
