Montréal food assistance demand hits record: 1.25M monthly requests

Moisson Montréal's HungerCount 2026 report: Montréal holds about 24% of Quebec's population but 45% of the province's food-assistance need; partner agencies handle 1,257,325 monthly requests, up 14% in a year.
Why it matters
According to the HungerCount 2026 report released October 21 by Moisson Montréal, one of Canada's largest food banks, Montréal accounts for only about 24% of Quebec's population but 45% of the province's food-assistance need. Its partner agencies handle 1,257,325 monthly food-assistance requests, a record, up 14% in one year, helping about 270,000 different individuals.
Key figures
Two-thirds of agencies say repeat-demand families have clearly increased, with food assistance becoming a norm rather than an emergency measure; about one-quarter of families receiving food baskets draw their main income from employment.
Demand has pushed the community network to its capacity limits: half of agencies have had to reduce food parcel sizes, a quarter sometimes have to turn people away, and half have used their own budgets to buy food. Director General Chantal Vézina said demand has pushed the community network to its capacity limit.
