Why it matters

A man in his 40s died on Saturday morning, October 3, after falling onto the tracks at Lionel-Groulx metro station in Montreal and being struck by an oncoming train. The incident forced a major service suspension on the Green Line between Lionel-Groulx and Berri-UQAM while emergency crews worked at the scene.

Full report

A 911 call came in around 11 a.m. Saturday. The man was unable to get back onto the platform and was struck by a Société de transport de Montréal (STM) train at the station. STM spokesperson Renaud Martel-Théorêt confirmed the death, saying 'everything suggests that this was, unfortunately, an accidental fall — not intentional,' and that the train could not stop in time. Montreal police said no criminal activity was suspected.

Urgences-santé sent two operations commanders, an advanced-care paramedic and an ambulance to the station; first responders were unable to resuscitate the man. The STM suspended Green Line service between Lionel-Groulx and Berri-UQAM during the emergency response and investigation; service was later restored. The transit agency is investigating what caused the fall.

Lionel-Groulx, in the Le Sud-Ouest borough on Atwater Avenue, is one of the busiest transfer stations in the Montreal Metro, connecting the Green and Orange lines.
