Montreal-area former MNA Mathieu Lévesque named interim CAQ leader

The Coalition Avenir Québec's national executive has designated founding member Mathieu Lévesque, a Gatineau native, as interim leader effective immediately, succeeding Christine Fréchette, who resigned the day after the party's devastating October 5 election loss.
Why it matters
The Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) has named Mathieu Lévesque as its interim leader, effective immediately, the party announced. Lévesque, a Gatineau native and founding member of the CAQ since 2012, served as the MNA for Chapleau from 2018 to 2026 but lost his seat in this month's provincial election.
Full report
According to Montreal media reports from October 18–19, Lévesque succeeds Christine Fréchette, who resigned the day after the October 5 election — the CAQ's worst defeat, with no MNAs elected. Lévesque is a business-law lawyer and member of the Barreau du Québec since 2013, and served as Minister responsible for Youth and Delegate Minister for Regions from April to October 2026. Former premier François Legault praised the choice, calling Lévesque a brilliant man.
On the same day, Quebec Liberal Party (PLQ) leader Charles Milliard presented his official opposition team, with Pontiac MNA André Fortin as parliamentary leader. The Liberals doubled their representation from 18 to 40 MNAs in the October 5 election, keeping official opposition status; Québec solidaire MNAs are sworn in Tuesday and the Conservatives on Thursday.
