Montreal Metro Celebrates 60th Anniversary With Day of Festivities Across Six Stations

Montreal's metro turns 60 on October 14 (it opened on October 14, 1966), with celebrations from 8:15 AM to 6:00 PM in six stations. Berri-UQAM is the main venue, hosting a brass band, pianist Alexandra Streliski, and the unveiling of a collective artwork gathering some 1,000 memories from employees and riders.
Why it matters
The metro is the daily lifeline of Montrealers, and it opened exactly 60 years ago on October 14, 1966. The 60th birthday is more than a party — on the same day the city announced new metro security measures and a service increase, the 60-year-old network stands at the crossroads of celebrating its past and investing in its future.
The celebrations
On October 14 from 8:15 AM to 6:00 PM, the festivities unfold in six stations. The main venue, Berri-UQAM station, features performances by the Sous les pommiers brass band, pianist Alexandra Stréliski and DJ Pierre-Yves Lord, plus wrestlers, dancers and a prize wheel.
A thousand memories
A collective artwork gathering about 1,000 memories shared by employees and passengers was unveiled at Berri-UQAM station during the event. Also on sale online: 60th-anniversary commemorative items, with proceeds going to Centraide of Greater Montreal and Réchaud-Bus, the mobile soup kitchen operating from a converted STM bus.
