Montreal announces new metro security measures, 5% service increase by 2027

The City of Montreal and the STM announced new metro security measures: St. John Ambulance social workers arrive this fall, and metro service will grow 5% from 2027, mostly in the evenings.
Why it matters
The City of Montreal and the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) have announced a package of new metro security measures, alongside a commitment to increase metro service by five per cent starting in 2027 — the city's latest move in response to riders' safety concerns.
Full report
Starting this fall, St. John Ambulance will deploy social workers across the metro system: two teams operating seven days a week in winter, and one team in summer. Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada said the approach is intended to ensure different situations get different responses — if someone is experiencing homelessness or a personal crisis, it doesn't need to involve the SPVM police; a social team can respond instead.
Service increase
From 2027, metro service will increase by five per cent, with most of the additional service coming in the evenings, matching the schedules of riders who travel outside rush hour. The city says the increase will cost $8 million. "The cost of not doing it is bigger than the cost of doing it," Martinez Ferrada said.
Transit advocates welcomed the new measures but said more investment is still needed, particularly for bus service.
