Montreal's Parc-Ex building fire injures 3, displaces 30

· N GLOBE

More than 100 firefighters battled the early-Wednesday blaze on Saint-Roch Street; residents reported explosions before the fire.

Why it matters

The overnight blaze forced 30 residents from their homes in the middle of the night, with the Red Cross providing emergency shelter. Fire officials have ruled out criminal causes for now and are looking into recent construction work on the building's commercial floor.

Full report

According to CBC, the fire broke out shortly after 2 a.m. on Wednesday (October 7) at a two-storey building on Saint-Roch Street near de l'Épée Avenue in Montreal's Parc-Extension neighbourhood. The first floor was a commercial space and the upper floor held roughly 10 occupied residential units. Residents reported hearing explosions before the fire. More than 100 Montreal firefighters responded; when crews arrived the building was fully engulfed and part of it had collapsed. Section Chief William Murray said the fire was contained before 7 a.m., with crews remaining on scene to watch for flare-ups.

Three people were taken to hospital with minor injuries, and about 30 residents are being cared for by the Canadian Red Cross. The fire department does not believe the fire was criminal in nature at this stage, and said work had been done on the commercial floor a few days earlier — investigators will look into whether there is a link.
