Montreal's Saint-Michel 5-alarm fire: ~150 firefighters respond, daycare evacuated

The blaze erupted Monday afternoon at a four-storey apartment building at Crémazie E. Blvd. and St-Michel Blvd.; three people taken to hospital with minor injuries.
Why it matters
One of Montreal's largest fire responses in recent years: on Monday afternoon, 19 October, a four-storey apartment building at the corner of Crémazie E. Blvd. and St-Michel Blvd. in the Saint-Michel neighbourhood caught fire, escalating to a fifth alarm — the city's highest fire-alert level. About 150 firefighters responded. A daycare inside the building was fully evacuated; no deaths and no serious injuries were reported.
What happened
Several tenants were initially trapped on their balconies and were rescued by firefighters. Three people were taken to hospital with minor injuries from smoke inhalation. Smoke blanketed the area and police closed nearby roads, asking drivers to avoid the sector near Highway 40 access ramps.
A Montreal fire department (SIM) section chief told Radio-Canada the operation was ongoing, with no official damage assessment yet and the cause still under investigation. Authorities urged residents to stay away from the Crémazie–St-Michel intersection to let crews work.
