Montréal Metro Launches Escalator Overhaul: 58 Units Across 17 Stations by 2031

The STM announced an escalator replacement program: 58 of the 298 escalators in its metro network will be replaced by 2031, starting at Jean-Talon station. The units are on average 40 years old.
Why it matters
The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) announced in its official press room on October 19 that it will replace 58 of the 298 escalators in its metro network by 2031, across 17 metro stations, with the first replacements at Jean-Talon Station. The STM says the escalators are on average 40 years old — the main reason for the program.
The goal
The STM says the replacements will reduce breakdowns and service interruptions, shorten travel times within stations through faster movement, and improve accessibility — particularly for riders carrying heavy loads or facing intermediate mobility challenges.
The schedule
Jean-Talon: four escalators, 2026–2028; McGill: one in 2027; Namur: two in 2027; Fabre: two in 2027; De la Concorde: one between 2027 and 2028. In 2028, work is scheduled for Iberville, Outremont, McGill, Acadie, Castelnau and Côte-Vertu stations, followed by Peel in 2029.
There will be disruption during the work: one escalator at Jean-Talon will be taken out of service until 2032 to train mechanics. Separately, 39 escalators for the Blue Line extension are part of a broader $200 million purchase.
