Full report
The shooting happened around 8:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12, outside a residential building on Tratman Avenue between Rowland Street and St. Peters Avenue in Westchester Square, the Bronx. The girl was struck in the torso and right foot and taken by private vehicle to Montefiore Hospital, where she was in serious but stable condition and expected to survive.
Police say she was not the intended target and are investigating whether she was caught in the crossfire of a possible gang-related shooting. Nearby residents gave investigators leads and pointed them to a gun discarded by the shooter. As of Tuesday morning, no arrests had been made and police were hunting two suspects.
The girl's family told CBS News New York she is recovering and improving, though still speaking very little because of her injuries.
