Emergency snow shovelers are hired per diem and called on after heavy snowfalls to remove snow and ice citywide from public areas such as bus stops, crosswalks, fire hydrants and step streets. Pay starts at $30 per hour and increases to $45 per hour after the first 40 hours worked in a week.
To be eligible, applicants must be at least 18 years old, legally authorized to work in the United States, and able to perform heavy, physically demanding labor in adverse winter weather. The department says shovelers who complete registration before Nov 30 will be eligible for a paid 4-hour orientation in December and fast-tracked processing to receive a paycheck within two weeks of working.
