Flatiron Energy announced its Blue Spruce Storage and Palladium Storage projects were selected in NYSERDA's first bulk energy storage solicitation. The eight awarded projects together are expected to draw over $1.6 billion in private investment and 500+ jobs, backing New York's 6 GW storage goal for 2030.
Why it matters
Electricity demand keeps climbing with AI data centers and electrification, and large-scale battery storage -- the grid's power bank -- has become a must-win for states. New York's first solicitation locks in eight projects and $1.6 billion of investment in one stroke, a key step toward the state's 6 GW storage target for 2030, with direct stakes for New Yorkers' bills and grid reliability.
Full report
Flatiron Energy announced on October 21 that its Blue Spruce Storage and Palladium Storage large-scale battery storage projects were selected in the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority's (NYSERDA) first bulk energy storage solicitation. Both projects are in New York City and are planned to be operational before the end of 2030, subject to required permits, local approvals and safety requirements.
NYSERDA estimates the eight awarded projects will together generate more than $1.6 billion in private investment and create more than 500 short- and long-term jobs. All supported projects will be held to New York's rigorous fire safety standards, covering first-responder training, safe siting and comprehensive emergency response plans.
Flatiron Energy Chief Commercial Officer Juliana Mandell said the projects are critical to improving grid reliability, reducing costs for ratepayers and deploying clean energy to meet the state's growing power needs.
