New York governor candidates Hochul, Blakeman face off in lone debate tonight

Gov. Kathy Hochul and Republican challenger Bruce Blakeman meet tonight at 7 p.m. ET for their only scheduled debate, three weeks before the Nov. 3 election.
Why it matters
With three weeks to go before the Nov. 3 election, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul and Republican challenger Bruce Blakeman meet tonight for their first and only scheduled debate — the only chance voters will get to see both candidates on the same stage before heading to the polls.
Debate details
Hosted by Spectrum News, the hourlong debate begins at 7 p.m. ET and airs on NY1 and Spectrum News channels across the state, as well as on YouTube. Moderators are Erroll Louis of NY1's "Inside City Hall" and Susan Arbetter of Spectrum's "Capitol Tonight."
The race and the issues
Recent polls show Hochul ahead: a Marist University poll had her at 53% to 42%, while Emerson College measured a 12-point lead. Blakeman, the Nassau County executive, has campaigned on taxes, utility bills and immigration, blaming Hochul for high costs; Hochul has pointed to tax relief under her tenure and tied Blakeman to President Donald Trump. Blakeman's campaign is also dealing with a cash shortage that could affect its ad spending in the final stretch.
