New York Attorney General Letitia James announced statewide gun buybacks have removed 10,534 guns since 2019; the October 20 Rochester event recovered 606 firearms, including 44 assault weapons.

Why it matters

Voluntary buybacks are one of the few tools New York's state government uses, alongside gun-control legislation, to directly shrink the pool of firearms in circulation. Passing the 10,000-gun milestone marks the scale the program has reached since 2019 and puts gun-violence prevention back in the spotlight during the local election season.

Full report

New York Attorney General Letitia James announced on October 20 that her office has removed more than 10,000 guns from New York's streets — 10,534 in total — through dozens of community gun buyback events hosted since 2019.

That day's Rochester buyback, hosted jointly by the Office of the Attorney General and the Rochester Police Department, recovered 606 firearms, including 44 assault weapons, 177 handguns and 247 long guns. The event was held at the Church of Love Faith Center.

“Taking dangerous weapons off the streets helps keep our communities safe,” James said. “My office's gun buyback events give New Yorkers a safe and secure way to rid their homes of deadly weapons and prevent them from falling into the wrong hands.”

Assemblymember Harry B. Bronson said that thanks to the buyback program, other strategies and state investments, gun violence and violent crime in Rochester have fallen to levels not seen in more than a decade and are outpacing the national decline.
