New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said on Wednesday that the midterms elected 'a new generation of leadership' and that 'it's a new dawn in America', urging Democrats to shift from defence to offence on affordability now that the party controls both chambers of Congress.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said on Wednesday (November 4) that the Democratic Party's midterm sweep marked 'a new dawn in America', urging the party to press its advantage and deliver an affordability agenda. 'Going through yesterday evening, it's a realization that it's a new dawn in America,' he told reporters. 'It's a new day in America.' From defence to offence: protect benefits, deliver affordability

Mamdani said the Democrats' decisive wins in the House and Senate mean the party 'can go from being on the defensive to being on the offensive'. He explained that 'the defensive means trying to prevent as many New Yorkers as possible from losing their SNAP benefits or losing their health insurance' — programmes cut back under the Republican-backed One Big Beautiful Bill Act — while 'the offensive is delivering to make life more affordable for them'. He urged Democrats to keep their 'foot on the gas'.

Welcoming democratic socialists to Congress

Mamdani singled out Brad Lander, Claire Valdez and Darializa Avila Chevalier, who won House seats on Tuesday, saying he 'can't wait to count on them as partners for our affordability agenda at the federal level'. Valdez and Avila Chevalier are members of the Democratic Socialists of America, as is Mamdani. He also welcomed Abdul El-Sayed's Senate victory in Michigan, making him the first Muslim US senator, saying it 'means so much to so many'.

A national figure built on affordability

Mamdani rose to national prominence through his 2025 mayoral campaign, centred on lowering the cost of living, and has become one of the most influential figures on the Democratic Party's left flank. The three progressive House candidates he endorsed in the primaries all won in deep-blue New York City districts. Mamdani said voters had backed 'a politics that will mean something', and that Democrats must now answer with change voters 'can feel in their wallets'.
