NYC mayor has "no plans" to replace NYPD Commissioner Tisch

Mayor Zohran Mamdani said Tuesday he intends to keep NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, pushing back against DSA calls to remove her after the Bronx ICE shooting; he cited record-low murders under his administration.

Why it matters

It is Mamdani's first public response to pressure from the left wing of his own political base to remove the police commissioner; his stance shows distance from progressive allies on public safety, opting to keep the current police leadership.

Full report

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said Tuesday (Oct 13), ahead of a ceremony honoring fallen NYPD officers: "Jessica Tisch is the police commissioner. I have no plans to change that."

The New York City chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America had called for Tisch's removal following last week's ICE-involved shooting in the Bronx, and demanded Mamdani use his authority to drive ICE out of New York City. In that incident, Oscar Belgal, a 28-year-old Dominican national, was shot during a federal immigration operation; the Department of Homeland Security said he refused to comply with officers' orders. His 5-year-old son was in the car at the time.

Mamdani defended keeping Tisch, saying he chose her for her record of "uprooting corruption from the upper echelons of the NYPD while lowering crime across our city"; over the ten months they have worked together, the city recorded its lowest number of murders in history, as well as record lows in shootings and shooting victims. Scott Munro, president of the Detectives' Endowment Association, said he believes the mayor supports the commissioner, noting crime is down and she is "doing her job."

Tuesday's ceremony honored 42 fallen NYPD members, including 41 who died from illnesses related to the Sept. 11 attacks and their aftermath, and Detective First Grade Didarul Islam, killed in the 2025 Midtown Manhattan mass shooting. Earlier this week, Mamdani directed the NYPD to conduct a comprehensive review of its use-of-force policies and announced reforms to strengthen accountability when officers face serious misconduct allegations.
