New York: MTA to Replace 29-Year-Old Marcy Avenue Switches, J and M Trains Rerouted Weekdays and Five Weekends

Starting Oct. 13, the MTA will replace 29-year-old track switches at the Marcy Avenue station in Williamsburg through late November. J trains will run local on weekday middays and be partly suspended on five weekends with free shuttle buses; M trains will be split into two sections.
Why it matters
The switches were last replaced in 1997 and have reached the end of their useful life. The MTA says replacement is crucial to keeping service reliable along the corridor. The J and M lines are the main link from Williamsburg, Bushwick, Bedford-Stuyvesant, East New York, Ozone Park and Jamaica to Lower Manhattan, affecting hundreds of thousands of riders.
What to know
From Oct. 13 through late November, service changes come in two patterns. On Tuesdays through Fridays in the weeks of Oct. 13, Oct. 20, Nov. 3, Nov. 10 and Nov. 17, J trains will run local between Marcy Avenue and Myrtle Avenue-Broadway from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
On five weekends (Oct. 17-18, Oct. 24-25, Nov. 7-8, Nov. 14-15, Nov. 21-22), from 3:30 a.m. Saturday to 10 p.m. Sunday, J trains will run only between Jamaica Center-Parsons/Archer and Myrtle Avenue-Broadway, with free shuttle buses replacing service between Myrtle Avenue-Broadway and Delancey St-Essex St. M trains will operate in two sections every 20 minutes. Work skips the marathon weekend (Oct. 31-Nov. 1).
Williamsburg will also see street closures on five weekends (Rodney Street, Keap Street and Broadway) and parking bans on Broadway between Marcy Avenue and Keap Street. Riders should check MTA service alerts, the MyMTA app, or call 511 before traveling.
Megan Flynn, assistant director of government and community relations at New York City Transit, said in a notice to community partners that replacing the 29-year-old switches is crucial to the continued reliability of subway service along the corridor.
