Rangers blank Red Wings 2-0 as Garand earns first NHL shutout

Dylan Garand made 22 saves for his first NHL shutout, backstopping the New York Rangers to a 2-0 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Friday night.

Why it matters

It took Dylan Garand just four NHL games to record his first career shutout. The 22-save performance carried the New York Rangers to a 2-0 win in Detroit — their second straight victory to open the season.

How it happened

Sean Durzi scored on the power play at 5:12 of the first period — his first goal with New York since being acquired from the Utah Mammoth on July 1 in the Vincent Trocheck deal. Durzi appeared to score again later in the period, but the goal was overturned on an offside challenge. Eeli Tolvanen sealed it with an empty-netter at 18:44 of the third. John Gibson made 19 saves for Detroit in the Red Wings' season opener, and Detroit rookie Anton Johansson hit the post in his NHL debut.

The stretch

The Rangers (2-1-0) were playing their third game in four nights, a night after a 5-1 rout of the Tampa Bay Lightning. Garand went 2-0-1 in three late-season appearances for New York last season.
