New York subway hits 1 billion rides in 2026, a week earlier than last year

On Oct 8, rider Dr. Lynval Clayton-Rowe tapped into the Jackson Heights–Roosevelt Avenue station and became the subway's billionth rider of 2026. The subway beat last year's milestone by a week; Sept 23 saw nearly 4.7 million rides, a post-pandemic single-day record.
Why it matters
At 10:24 a.m. on October 8, rider Dr. Lynval Clayton-Rowe tapped his OMNY card at the Jackson Heights–Roosevelt Avenue station, becoming the 1-billionth New York subway rider of 2026. He received a $100 OMNY gift card. Gov. Kathy Hochul and MTA Chair Janno Lieber announced the milestone.
A week earlier than 2025
The subway crossed the billion-ride threshold a full week earlier than in 2025 (Oct 14) and a month earlier than in 2024 (Nov 4). Weekday ridership averaged more than 4.2 million in September, with September 23 topping nearly 4.7 million — a post-pandemic single-day record. Fifteen days in September exceeded 4 million rides.
Strong post-pandemic recovery
The figures point to a continuing strong recovery of subway ridership after the pandemic. The MTA says the rebound reflects the city's active economic life and gives the agency extra confidence as it pushes service improvements and safety measures across the system.
