Why it matters

The NYPD said that around 12:21 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 17), a man in his 30s was shot once in the chest during a dispute with the suspect on the northbound E train platform at the 53rd Street–7th Avenue station in Midtown Manhattan. EMS transported him to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, where he was pronounced dead; his identity is being withheld pending family notification.

The suspect fled on foot northbound on 7th Avenue, and no arrests had been made as of Saturday evening. The NYPD released surveillance photos showing the suspect in a red tracksuit with a black vest, a black face mask and a backpack, wanted for homicide within the Midtown North Precinct/Transit District 1. Anyone with information can call 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or message @NYPDTips on X.

Transit safety

The New York Post reports this is the seventh murder in the city's transit system this year, up 75% from four at the same point last year. MTA chief security officer Michael Kemper said the shooting grew out of a dispute between several men and that no other riders were hurt: "guns have no place in transit."
