New York Mayor Mamdani Doubles Artist Grants to $10,000, First Increase in Nearly 20 Years

Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced on Oct. 2 that city-funded grants for individual artists and small nonprofits will rise from $5,000 to up to $10,000 — the first increase in nearly two decades.

Why it matters

New York City's grants for artists had been frozen at $5,000 for nearly 20 years while the cost of living soared. Doubling them is a significant move by City Hall to keep creators — filmmakers, dancers, writers, painters and more across all five boroughs — able to afford living in the city.

Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani, Deputy Mayor for Economic Justice Julie Su, and Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA) Commissioner Diya Vij announced on Oct. 2 that city-funded grants for individual artists and small nonprofits will increase from $5,000 to up to $10,000, the first increase in nearly 20 years, according to the Mayor's Office.

Each year DCLA provides funding to local regrant partners in each borough, which in turn distribute grants to artists and collectives. Applications are now open in Brooklyn, the Bronx, Manhattan and Queens; Staten Island's cycle opens in November. Deadlines: Bronx Council on the Arts, Oct. 30; Brooklyn Arts Council, Oct. 11; Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Nov. 12; New York Foundation for the Arts in Queens, Nov. 17.

"Artists are working New Yorkers with the same costs as everyone else," Mamdani said in an Instagram video filmed with Commissioner Vij. "Doubling these grants is a critical step towards making sure that the painters, musicians, filmmakers, and other artists who bring life to this city can afford to call it home." Starting this month, grantees also get a dedicated monthly shopping day at Materials for the Arts for free art supplies.
