A finance ministry director told the FCT High Court the ministry was unaware of the ₦124.86bn CBN withdrawal; the trial of ex-CBN governor Godwin Emefiele continues Wednesday.

Why it matters

The trial of former Central Bank of Nigeria governor Godwin Emefiele over the alleged unlawful redesign of the naira heard dramatic testimony Tuesday at the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Maitama, Abuja. Ali Mohammed, a director at the Federal Ministry of Finance and the prosecution's 10th witness, said the ministry was unaware of the withdrawal of ₦124.86 billion from the CBN, and that documents showed no instruction from the ministry to the Office of the Accountant-General to fund it from the Consolidated Revenue Fund.

Full report

Emefiele is being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a four-count charge of alleged disobedience to lawful directives and unlawful acts said to have harmed members of the public. The court also heard the continuation of testimony from PW9, Hamisu Abdullahi, the CBN's Director of Banking Services; the prosecution tendered an email purportedly conveying a directive from the then CBN governor plus a certificate of compliance, admitted as exhibits. Justice Maryanne Anenih adjourned the case to Wednesday, October 7, for cross-examination of PW10 and continuation of the trial.
