The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced Friday that the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize goes to 85-year-old South African jurist Navanethem “Navi” Pillay, honoring her lifelong work for peace and international law.

Why it matters

This is the fifth Nobel Prize announced this week. The committee said Pillay, “with exceptional courage and integrity,” has led the way towards a more comprehensive global legal order, and was instrumental in ensuring that war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide are prosecuted. The award marks the 125th anniversary of the peace prize.

Full report

Jørgen Watne Frydnes, chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, announced in Oslo on Friday morning that the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize is awarded to Navanethem “Navi” Pillay “for her efforts to promote peace and international law.” The prize money is 12 million Swedish kronor (about US$1.2 million).

Pillay, 85, qualified as a lawyer in 1967 under apartheid in South Africa and became the first Black woman appointed to the country’s High Court. She served as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014, later as a judge of the International Criminal Court and president of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, and more recently chaired the UN Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory.

“A common thread runs from her early work defending Nelson Mandela and others who stood up against apartheid to her service as a judge in some of the key international court cases of our time,” the committee said, noting that she has brought hope to victims of violence and demonstrated a strong moral compass.

Notably, U.S. President Donald Trump had repeatedly said he deserved the prize; last year’s laureate, Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, gave Trump her medal, but the committee has made clear the honour itself cannot be transferred. Only the economics prize, due Monday (Oct 12), remains this year.
