Mathieu Chatelain, 40, of Rockland set out Sunday on a 100-kilometre ultra marathon, aiming to finish in under 12 hours and raise $100,000 for The Ottawa Hospital Foundation's Campaign to Create Tomorrow — in gratitude to the hospital that saved his father's life more than 30 years ago.

Why it matters

Mathieu Chatelain, 40, of Rockland, Ontario, set out Sunday, October 11, on a 100-kilometre ultra marathon with a goal of finishing in under 12 hours, raising $100,000 for The Ottawa Hospital Foundation's Campaign to Create Tomorrow. CTV Ottawa's Camille Wilson profiled the run.

A father, a son and a surgeon

Chatelain insists he isn't a runner. More than 30 years ago, his father Pierre underwent brain surgery at The Ottawa Hospital that saved his life. Years later, at a foundation fundraising breakfast, Chatelain found himself seated next to Dr. David Schramm — the neurosurgeon who had operated on his father, and who even remembered the case. The reunion became the starting point for his fundraising run.

Where the money goes

The funds support construction of a new Ottawa Hospital campus featuring the region's largest adult trauma centre. The foundation calls the $500-million redevelopment a once-in-a-century health-care project, with community donations already surpassing $400 million. Chatelain hopes his run inspires generosity to help bring more parents back to their families.
