Global Affairs Canada's annual consular report records 577 arrest or detention cases involving Canadians in the US between April 2025 and March 2026, up 60% year over year, as Canadian visits to the US fell 25%.

Why it matters

Global Affairs Canada published its Annual Consular Data Report for 2025 to 2026 on October 8, showing a 60% jump in cases of Canadians arrested or detained in the United States, even as Canadian travel to the US dropped by a quarter.

Between April 1, 2025 and March 31, 2026, consular officials managed 7,436 cases, up about 3% from the previous year. Cases of Canadians arrested or detained in the US reached 577, up from 361 a year earlier. The report does not explain what drove the increase.

Over the same period, visits by Canadians to the US fell from 26.8 million to 20 million, a 25% decline. Since US President Donald Trump returned to the White House in January 2025 and ramped up immigration enforcement, Canadians have reported uncomfortable questioning at the border and cases of detention over minor infractions.

By the numbers

Officials also issued 33,437 apostille certificates, received 208,174 passport applications from abroad, and responded to 289,254 enquiries through the Emergency Watch and Response Centre and the contact centre for Canadians in the United States.
