Ottawa hosts First Nations Day of Ceremony today ahead of First Ministers' Meeting

National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak has announced a Day of Ceremony in Ottawa on October 25, from 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the John G. Diefenbaker Building grounds, to open the First Nations-First Ministers' Meeting in a good way.
Why it matters
Assembly of First Nations (AFN) National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak has announced that a Day of Ceremony will be held in Ottawa on October 25 to begin the First Nations-First Ministers' Meeting. She said that just as discussions in the meeting room must be grounded in the affirmation and recognition of First Nations rights and jurisdiction, the meeting itself must be grounded in First Nations ceremony and protocols.
The ceremony
The Day of Ceremony runs today from 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on the grounds of the John G. Diefenbaker Building, 111 Sussex Drive, Ottawa. The AFN has worked with Elders and Knowledge Keepers from all regions to confirm an approach led by the protocols of the host Algonquin Nation and involving the traditions of all participating First Nations.
The National Chief is also calling on First Nations across the country to hold their own ceremonies and gatherings on October 25, to provide spiritual strength and solidarity for the First Nations-First Ministers' Meeting and for First Nations people from coast to coast to coast. She called it a significant and pivotal moment, as representatives of a country that once tried to ban First Nations ceremonies and eliminate their languages join in a spirit of mutual respect, recognition and partnership. Formal discussions at the meeting take place on October 26.
