Ottawa IRCC Staff Now Required in Office Four Days a Week as Space Crunch Persists

· N GLOBE

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada says staff in the National Capital Region must be in the office at least four days a week as of Oct. 19, complying with the government-wide directive. Statistics Canada and Global Affairs remain on delayed timelines; PSPC says current space fits only about 90% of staff four days a week.

Why it matters

Ottawa hosts the largest concentration of federal public servants in Canada, so IRCC's return-to-office move directly affects thousands of National Capital Region employees' commutes and daily lives. According to CTV News Ottawa, an IRCC spokesperson confirmed: "As of October 19, the four-day on-site requirement takes effect in the National Capital Region."

Full report

Since July 6, the federal government has required core public service employees on-site at least four days a week (executives five), but Global Affairs Canada, Statistics Canada and IRCC had delayed the mandate due to a lack of office space. IRCC said it is working with Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) to address space needs outside the NCR; the former GCcoworking site in Charlottetown has been assigned to IRCC to accommodate staff.

PSPC said last month its existing office space can accommodate approximately 90 per cent of staff on-site four days a week "through a combination of assigned and unassigned workstations," with a target of 95 per cent by March 31, 2027.
