Ottawa O-Train east extension testing delayed to November over software flaw

OC Transpo says pre-trial running on the O-Train east extension is delayed to November over a safety-critical software issue, another setback for the Blair-to-Orléans link.

Why it matters

The eastern extension of Ottawa's O-Train Line 1 has been years in the making, and each delay pushes back relief for Orléans commuters who have been waiting for the rail link to Blair Station and five new stops in the east end. A software problem described as safety-critical is the latest reason for the slip.

Full report

OC Transpo said Friday that pre-trial running on the O-Train east extension is no longer expected to begin in early October, and will instead be pushed to November. The transit agency cited a critical software flaw with the trains, with CTV News Ottawa reporting OC Transpo head Rick Leary issued a memo to city council on the shifted timeline.

The eastern extension of Line 1 runs from Blair Station to five additional stops in the east end toward Orléans. According to local outlet ottown, which cited CBC News, the transit agency did not say how long the delay will last or when the next testing stage might begin, and fuller details on the cause of the software issues have not been independently confirmed.

The setback follows a period of service adjustments on Line 1 for Stage 2 east integration work, with OC Transpo testing train control software that links the extension to the existing Line 1 system.
