Full report

The Ottawa Board of Trade hosted a mayoral debate on the evening of Oct. 7 at the University of Ottawa's Faculty of Social Sciences Building, filmed by Rogers TV. The event covered taxes, infrastructure, transit, economic development and public safety.

The sharpest exchange came over money: incumbent mayor Mark Sutcliffe committed to a maximum annual tax increase of 2.5 percent — the only candidate to name a specific figure. Jeff Leiper countered that Sutcliffe's proposed $10 million infrastructure plan was “significantly underfunded.” Neil Saravanamutoo pitched his $1 fare program, arguing OC Transpo “resembles a leaky bucket,” while Alex Lawson called for more recovery beds and a stronger treatment-focused strategy on the opioid crisis.

Ottawa Life Magazine's analysis said the evening “produced no obvious frontrunner” ahead of the Oct. 26 vote.
