Two residents who contracted measles outside Ontario visited eight Ottawa businesses in early October; OPH asks anyone who was at those places to watch for symptoms for 21 days.

Why it matters

Measles is highly contagious. OPH says two residents contracted measles outside Ontario and visited several Ottawa businesses in early October. Anyone who was at those places should check their vaccination status and watch for symptoms for 21 days (until Oct. 22–24).

The eight possible exposure sites (per OPH)

Tim Hortons (3224 Hawthorne Rd.): Thursday, Oct. 1, 5:30–8 p.m.; Your Independent Grocer (Elmvale Acres Shopping Centre): Friday, Oct. 2, 3:15–5:45 p.m.; Rexall drugstore (Elmvale Acres): Oct. 2, 3:45–6 p.m.; Metro (2261 Walkley Rd.): Oct. 2, 4–6:15 p.m.; Subway (3190 Hawthorne Rd.): Oct. 2, 5:30–8 p.m.; McDonald's (1796 St. Laurent Blvd.): Oct. 2, 5:30–8 p.m.; Ruby's Restaurant (10 York St., ByWard Market): Oct. 2, 6:30–9 p.m.; Tim Hortons (2800 Lancaster Rd.): Sunday, Oct. 3, 5:30–8 p.m.

Measles symptoms include high fever, cough, runny nose, red watery eyes, white spots in the mouth, and a red rash starting on the face. If symptoms appear, call your health care provider and mention the exposure before visiting.

What OPH says

OPH says the risk to the general population remains low, and urges residents to check their measles (MMR) vaccination records. People born before 1970 are generally considered immune.
