Ottawa police chief urges drivers to slow down as 2026 road deaths surpass all of 2025

Chief Eric Stubbs called on drivers to slow down and stay alert Friday after a week of fatal collisions; Ottawa police say 29 people have died on city roads this year, already more than all of 2025.
Why it matters
CTV News Ottawa's Oct. 17 evening newscast reported that Ottawa Police Chief Eric Stubbs is urging drivers to slow down and pay attention after multiple fatal collisions this week. The Ottawa Police Service said in an Oct. 14 release that 29 lives have been lost on Ottawa roads this year, urging immediate action from all road users — already more than the total for all of 2025.
According to the police newsroom, the past week alone brought several serious collisions, including a serious crash on Burton Road that left a 20-year-old man fighting for his life. Police say road safety has become an urgent citywide issue.
What drivers should do
Slow down, avoid distracted driving, and take extra care in residential areas and school zones. Witnesses to serious collisions, or anyone with dashcam footage, can call Ottawa police at 613-236-1222 ext. 2345 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.
