The Ottawa Senators won 4-1 in New Jersey on Monday night, with Linus Ullmark stopping 29 shots and staying perfect on the season despite a depleted blue line.

Why it matters

The Ottawa Senators are off to a strong start despite a depleted lineup: Monday night's 4-1 win over the New Jersey Devils improved them to 5-1-0, with goaltender Linus Ullmark staying a perfect 5-0-0 on the season. It's the team's first season since trading captain Brady Tkachuk to Florida in the summer.

How the game unfolded

After a scoreless first period, Shane Pinto opened the scoring just nine seconds into the second, finishing a rush set up by Michael Amadio. Stephen Halliday doubled the lead on the power play, Tim Stutzle added a goal and an assist, and Tyler Kleven sealed the 4-1 win with an empty-netter. New Jersey's lone goal came from Arseny Gritsyuk in the third period.

Ullmark stopped 29 of 30 shots, beaten only with five minutes left. The Devils took nine penalties and have now surrendered the opening goal in five straight games, falling to 2-3-0.

Another injury blow

Senators defenseman Nikolas Matinpalo left in the first period with an upper-body injury after being boarded by Anthony Mantha, who received a five-minute major. Ottawa was already missing Jake Sanderson and Artem Zub on the blue line, while forward William Eklund is out for an extended period.

The Senators host the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday.
