The Senators opened the NHL season with a 3-2 road win over Toronto; new captain Thomas Chabot scored the first goal and added an assist, and Linus Ullmark made 27 saves.

Why it matters

The Ottawa Senators opened the NHL season with a 3-2 road win over the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Senators were the last NHL team to start their season, and new captain Thomas Chabot marked his first game wearing the "C" with a goal and an assist.

Game recap

The game was played Saturday night in Toronto. Chabot opened the scoring, Michael Amadio tied it, and Stephen Halliday scored the winner at 9:46 of the third period just as a penalty expired. Goaltender Linus Ullmark made 27 saves. For Toronto, Matthews and Marchenko each scored, and Bobrovsky stopped 26 shots.

Injury concern and side notes

Top defenceman Jake Sanderson left in the first period with an injury and did not return, in what looked like a recurrence of a training-camp issue. Chabot replaces former captain Brady Tkachuk, traded to the Florida Panthers in the summer; Leafs assistant coach Daniel Alfredsson faced his old Ottawa club as an opponent for the first time.
