· N GLOBE

The 24-year-old defenceman left at 12:45 of the first period after falling awkwardly along the boards and did not return; no timeline given for his return.

Why it matters

Sanderson, 24, is Ottawa’s top-pairing defenceman and the highest-paid blueliner on the roster. Losing him for any length of time would be a serious blow: he put up 14 goals and 40 assists for 54 points in 67 games last season and finished 10th in Norris Trophy voting.

Full report

OTTAWA — The Ottawa Senators got some bad news along with their season-opening win. Defenceman Jake Sanderson was forced to leave Saturday’s 3-2 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs with an injury and did not return.

The injury appeared to occur at 12:45 of the first period, when Sanderson fell awkwardly to a knee after engaging Maple Leafs forward Nick Paul along the boards. He went to Ottawa’s dressing room and was later confirmed out for the rest of the game.

Sanderson had already missed part of training camp with an undisclosed injury. The team has not released a timeline for his return or details on the nature of the injury.

The Senators won the game on goals from Thomas Chabot — playing his first game as Ottawa captain — Michael Amadio and Stephen Halliday, with Linus Ullmark making 27 saves. Ottawa visits the Boston Bruins on Monday for its second game of the season.
