Ottawa city council voted unanimously on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, to begin renaming Trump Avenue, a residential street in the Central Park neighbourhood off Merivale Road. The motion by River Ward Councillor Riley Brockington directs him to hold a public consultation and form a working group of three to five residents to propose replacement names for a council vote next year.
"I don't like the idea of anything that's named for Donald Trump, who's demonstrated hostility towards Canada, in our city," Mayor Mark Sutcliffe said after the vote. Brockington said he was embarrassed a street in the nation's capital carries the name, but declined to dwell on the reasons: "I don't want to give a platform anymore to the person who is on the current street sign blades."
The street's 62 homes sit in a subdivision whose streets were given New York-themed names in the late 1990s and early 2000s — Staten Way, Bloomingdale Street and others — when Trump was known mainly as a real-estate developer. A 2021 renaming attempt failed after residents split 21–21 on the change.
