Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin, 41, told his teammates Monday morning that the 2026-27 season will be the final one of his 22-year NHL career. He holds the league's all-time goals record with 929.

Why it matters

The NHL's all-time goals leader, Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin, announced to his teammates in the locker room on Monday morning that the 2026-27 season will be his last in the NHL, closing a 22-year career. The team later shared his statement on social media.

"My family and I decided this summer that this will be my final year in the NHL," the 41-year-old Russian said in a statement. "I love this game so much, but I know in my heart it's the right decision."

A legendary career

Ovechkin broke Wayne Gretzky's all-time goal-scoring record last April with his 895th goal, and opened the season with 929, the most in league history. He has spent his entire career with the Capitals, recording 1,688 points in 1,575 games, delivering the franchise's first Stanley Cup in 2018, serving as captain for 18 years, winning the Hart Memorial Trophy three times as MVP and leading the league in goals nine times.

He signed a one-year contract worth up to $9 million in July to remain in Washington. The Capitals play their first home game of the season on Wednesday.
