Full report

At about 1:56 p.m. EDT on Friday (Oct. 9), a 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck about 10 km west of Pitaloza Arriba in Panama's Herrera province, at a shallow depth of roughly 12 km. The US Geological Survey (USGS) initially measured it at magnitude 8.0 before revising it to 7.7. A powerful 6.6 aftershock followed hours later, and the University of Panama has recorded more than 45 aftershocks.

The US Tsunami Warning System issued tsunami threat bulletins covering the Pacific coasts of Panama, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Peru, Nicaragua, Guatemala, El Salvador and Mexico, warning of waves up to three metres. As of publication, no major tsunami damage had been reported, and coastal communities remain under monitoring.
