Roof fire at Paris Austerlitz station construction site brought under control; ~1,000 m² of roof destroyed

· N GLOBE

On the morning of Oct. 14, a violent roof fire broke out at a construction site at 3, boulevard de l'Hôpital in Paris's 13th arrondissement, adjacent to Gare d'Austerlitz. About 1,000 m² of roof was destroyed; the fire is now under control with no victims, cause unknown, and train services unaffected.

Why it matters

Thick black smoke was visible kilometres away over Paris, and the site sits right next to Gare d'Austerlitz — a major Paris rail hub. Fortunately the blaze was at a construction site, not the station itself: SNCF confirmed train services were completely unaffected, averting a transport shutdown.

Full report

At around 9:30 a.m. on October 14, a violent roof fire erupted at a building under renovation at 3, boulevard de l'Hôpital in Paris's 13th arrondissement, adjacent to Gare d'Austerlitz. The building, set to house the future EssilorLuxottica headquarters, is being built by Bouygues Bâtiment Île-de-France.

The Paris fire brigade (BSPP) reported that roughly 1,000 square metres of roof were completely destroyed, with flames also spreading to parts of the fourth and top floor. Around 30 fire engines and about a hundred firefighters were deployed, and the construction site was evacuated. The fire is now under control ("maîtrisé").

Fire officials confirmed no victims and no one missing. The cause is not yet known. SNCF told AFP the affected building is only an annex of the station and that train services and station access were "absolutely not impacted"; the station's administrative offices were evacuated as a precaution ahead of a planned power cut.

Firefighters urged the public to avoid the area to let emergency vehicles through.
